For the third time in three years, Al Reszel cycled thousands of miles to support breast cancer research. This time, his efforts took him across the country – from Los Angeles to BCRF’s office in New York City.
The 3,500-mile ride took him 41 days. He rode through 13 states, faced hills, heat and open road to make it to Manhattan on July 13. Along the way, their efforts inspired family, friends and supporters to donate over $10,000 for BCRF.
“It was a good ride. There were good days and there were tough days,” Al said referring to the challenging terrain he conquered along the way.
His wife Terry was not only the inspiration behind his feat but also his copilot, shadowing him in their van the entire way.
“I couldn’t have done it without Terry,” he said. “She was the key.”
Terry was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. A month after receiving her diagnosis she underwent a bilateral mastectomy. Al remained her rock throughout her diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Now, the pair continues to take on life’s challenges and become staunch supporters of breast cancer research.
“As educators, we are strong believers in the power of research,” Al says. “Scientific discoveries will save lives.”
In 2016, Terry and Al launched their inaugural ride from Minnesota to Chicago – a route that spanned more than 500 miles. Last year, Al completed a 1,744-mile ride from St. Paul, Minnesota to BCRF’s office in New York City.
This year, the couple was greeted in front of BCRF’s office in Manhattan. His family and grandchildren made the trip from Minnesota to celebrate his momentous achievement.
For Al, the ride was a way to channel his belief in the power of research with his passion for cycling.
“I can’t do research, but I can ride a bike,” he said.
