In February 2015, Kim Rhodes received devastating news: she had stage II breast cancer. A mother to four young children, she was terrified. The disease had already struck her mother, sister and grandmother. She soon underwent a double mastectomy followed by several reconstructive surgeries.
Today, Kim is in remission and grateful for the research that saved her life. So is her 8-year-old daughter, Brynne. Last summer, the 2nd grader asked her mom if she could run a pink lemonade stand on July 4 to support breast cancer research. Kim jumped at the opportunity to give back.
“I am determined to stop it before my daughter faces this diagnosis,” says Kim. She pledged to double Brynne’s impact by matching every dollar she raised through selling the lemonade.
Brynne and Kim were amazed by the generosity of their community. With Brynne manning the table, both Kim and her husband made new pitchers of lemonade to keep up with the demand.
Not only were people purchasing the cups of lemonade, but they were also making additional donations. For her first go, Brynne was able to donate a total of $100 to BCRF.
One year later, Brynne is even more determined to make a difference – and wants others to do the same. With July 4 approaching, she has been challenging others to create a pink lemonade stand on the holiday weekend to support BCRF.
“It can help people like my mom and other breast cancer patients,” she says.
