“Mercy for a Cause” Raises Outstanding $12.3 Million for Research

By BCRF | December 5, 2024

Overwatch community has now raised more than $25 million for lifesaving research

The final tally is in! Thanks to the Overwatch® 2 community’s resounding excitement for this summer’s “Mercy for a Cause” campaign, Blizzard Entertainment has donated $12.3 million to BCRF—the second-largest single corporate donation ever made to BCRF.

Blizzard’s first campaign for BCRF in 2018 raised $12.7 million, which still stands as the largest single corporate donation ever made to the Foundation. With these two campaigns, the Overwatch community’s cumulative support for lifesaving research now stands at more than $25 million dollars.

“We are profoundly moved by the incredible support this campaign received,” BCRF President and CEO Donna McKay said. “This milestone not only highlights the strength of the Overwatch community––uniting players to raise funds for breast cancer research––but also underscores the immense difference that collective impact can make.”

During the two-week “Mercy for a Cause” campaign in June and July, Overwatch 2 players could purchase the original limited-edition Pink Mercy skin from the 2018 campaign. This year’s campaign further upped the ante with a new limited-edition Rose Gold Mercy Bundle. One hundred percent of the purchase prices of the two skins, excluding applicable platform fees and taxes, were donated.

“This achievement is a testament to the incredible generosity of our Overwatch community,” Blizzard President Johanna Faries said. “The game team did an outstanding job creating the Mercy skins, and we couldn’t be more proud of this collective effort. Together with our Overwatch community and our partners at the BCRF, we’ve made a significant impact in the fight against breast cancer. Thank you to all our players and fans for your unwavering support.”

Blizzard’s 2018 donation helped launch BCRF’s Precision Prevention Initiative and supported researchers who developed advanced AI models to analyze mammograms, identified drugs to potentially delay tumor formation, create and test tools that predict risk, and more.

Over the coming months, BCRF and Overwatch 2 will announce more details about the projects and researchers these funds will support. But there’s no doubt that this record-breaking donation will make a huge impact in the future.

“This generous contribution and electric partnership with Blizzard will drive lifesaving discoveries and bring us closer to breakthroughs that will save lives and end breast cancer,” McKay said.
